Boulder City, Nevada: A Hidden Oasis Above the Desert

Boulder City. Nevada

Just 21 miles from Las Vegas, Boulder City feels like another world — a peaceful, green oasis perched 2,500 feet above the Mojave Desert. With tree-shaded streets, manicured parks, and sweeping views of Lake Mead, this historic town offers a welcome contrast to the fast pace of the Las Vegas Valley.

If you’ve ever wanted a place where small-town charm meets endless outdoor adventure, Boulder City is it.

A “High Oasis” in the Desert

Boulder City’s elevation — 2,500 feet above sea level — makes it literally a high oasis in the desert. With green lawns, mature shade trees, and neighborhoods overlooking Lake Mead and the Lake Mead National Recreation Area, it’s easy to forget you’re in Southern Nevada.

The city’s prime location puts you within:

  • 5 miles of Lake Mead
  • 8 miles of the Hoover Dam and Mike O’Callaghan–Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge
  • 21 miles of Las Vegas

It’s the perfect home base for anyone who loves proximity to adventure while enjoying peace and quiet at the end of the day.

A Town Built by the Hoover Dam

Boulder City’s roots go back to 1931, when it was built to house the 4,000 workers constructing the Hoover Dam. The workers and their families, known as the “31ers,” helped shape the town’s identity — one of community pride, hard work, and neighborly spirit.

Originally managed by the Bureau of Reclamation, Boulder City was a federally supervised town where every home, street, and utility system was government-owned. That changed in 1958, when Congress passed the Boulder City Act, officially creating an independent municipal government. Residents gained ownership of their homes, 33 square miles of land, and the local utilities.

To this day, the city’s charter prohibits gaming — making it one of only two cities in Nevada where casinos are not allowed.

Small-Town Living with Big Personality

With a population of roughly 15,500 residents, Boulder City is small but vibrant. It’s a place where people know their neighbors, wave from their porches, and come together for community events year-round.

Locals take pride in maintaining a quiet, small-town atmosphere — a refreshing alternative to the hustle of Las Vegas. But quiet doesn’t mean boring. Boulder City is packed with culture, recreation, and charm.

History, Culture & Community

The city’s historic downtown district along Boulder City Parkway is the heart of the community, filled with antique shops, galleries, cafés, and preserved 1930s architecture.

Boulder City hosts numerous annual events, including Art in the Park and the Spring Jamboree. The city also features a modern library, museums, and active arts scene.

Recreation for Every Lifestyle

Boulder City offers an enormous variety of recreation within its borders, including:

  • 71 acres of landscaped parks
  • 36 miles of hiking and biking trails
  • Year-round swimming, tennis, and sports courts
  • Two municipal golf courses

Boulder Creek Golf Club and the Boulder City Municipal Course are both well-loved, while the private Cascata Golf Course offers a luxury playing experience.

Veterans’ Memorial Park: The Heart of Outdoor Fun

At over 80 acres, Veterans’ Memorial Park includes:

  • A 3.5-acre fishing pond
  • Sports fields and a BMX track
  • A model boat pond
  • Walking trails and shaded picnic areas

Adventure Awaits Just Beyond Town

Lake Mead National Recreation Area offers boating, kayaking, fishing, camping, and scenic hiking. Bootleg Canyon provides world-class mountain biking and panoramic views.

The surrounding desert hills and canyons are home to bighorn sheep, coyotes, and other wildlife, visible along local trail systems.

Easy Access to Sky, Water & Land

Boulder City Municipal Airport offers Grand Canyon flights and one of the region’s premier skydiving centers. Scenic trails, water access, and peaceful shaded streets offer something for every lifestyle.

Boulder City in a Nutshell

  • Elevation: 2,500 feet
  • Population: 15,500
  • Founded: 1931 (Incorporated 1958)
